About the course

The General English course is designed to provide students who have a language ability of beginner to advanced, with the opportunity to further develop their English language skills.

Students may enroll in the course to develop their English for general purposes or to refresh/improve their skills before undertaking further study.

There are two factors that have led to the development of the General English course at The Future Language School. First, to provide an opportunity to overseas students to improve language ability for social and vocational purposes studying in an English speaking country. The course is designed to motivate learners with content based on up-to-date, interesting and globally relevant topics.

Secondly, the location. The School, being in one of the most popular cities in Australia, has developed the General English course to attract overseas students who wish to develop their English skills, visit Sydney and experience Australian culture. Sydney has a lot to offer potential foreign students: warm climate, beautiful beaches, a laid-back lifestyle and good job opportunities. The Future Language School would like to combine the enjoyment of studying the English language with an awareness and appreciation of the cultural richness and heritage which form our social and cultural climate in Australia.

Target Students

Our course is aimed at international students who hold an education visa. They will typically be:

  • Students who wish to improve or refresh their English skills to achieve personal goals/
  • Students who wish to improve or refresh their Emglish skill before commencing vocational courses or undertake other English skill before commencing vocation courses undertake other English courses in the future (e.g. IELTS Preparation or EAP).

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements for international students:

  • There is no requirement to enter Beginner level.
  • To enter the Elementary-Advanced levels students will need to satisfy the English entry level requirements. The level of English will be determined during the placement tests on arrival.
  • Students with no current IELTS score mus participate in a placement test. AND

Course Structure

The complete program is conducted over a period of 60 weeks and consists of six levels: Beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. Students who successfully complete a level will be promoted to the next level.

Delivery Methods

We aim to deliver to the standards of a real workplace environment by:

  • Using the communicative approach which is based on the idea that learning a languagae successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning and involving learners in real communication.
  • Embracing the digital age to make it more interactive and appealing to students.
  • Conducting online research on class and/or as part of homework provides the opportunity to further investigate the topic
  • Using Online Skills, an online platform, which provide a blended and personalised learning enviroment.

Assessment

Students who enroll into the General English Course are tested on arrival.
Formative assessments are conducted fortnightly for all levels to monitor student’s progress. The assessments is based on the modules studied within the two-week periods and it assesses students achievement of learning outcomes from a particular block. Students will receive constructive face to face feedback from their teacher after each assessment to help them improve on their weakness/es. There are four macro skill assessments (speaking, reading including vocabulary, listening and writing including grammar).
The assessment conducted in week 10 is a summative assessment. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of the block by comparing it against the benchmark.

Satisfactory Course Progress

Students who achieve 60% overall score with no less that 50% in individual scores will be making satisfactory progress and no intervention will be required. Students who do not achieve 60% overall score with no less that 50% in individual score s int he formative assessment will be deemed to be ‘at risk’ and will be given the opportunity to discuss intervention strategies with their teacher to assist them in achieving satisfactory course progress within the term.

Course Completion

On satisfactory completion of the course/level students will be issued with a certificate.
Students who do not meet the requirements regarding the length of the enrollment and satisfactory achievement will be issued a Certificate Of Partial Completion. Students who require a Certificate Of Completion but do not meet the requirements will be advised to extend the course.

Attendance

Students visa holders are required to attend classes and maintain satisfactory attendance, i.e. 80% over the period of studies. Attendance is recorded on the roll at every session for 20 hours per week. If the attendance falls below the 80 percent requirement for the education of the Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE), FLS may report students to the Department of Immigration.

Class teacher provide assistance with any skills/language issues as art of the intervention stratefy. Teacher Support class is available to students who require extra help with homework or extra practice in key learning areas

A qualified professional assist students welfare issues free of charge.
