English for Academic Purposes
About the course
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is designed to focus on the development of English skills for vocational and higher education studies. Students will engage in activities that will help them execute spoken and written English required for their future academic studies. Learners will participate in minimum 20 hours a week of face-to-face English studies focusing on developing academic reading, writing, speaking, listening, note-taking, summary writing, essay writing and presentation skills. Students will develop these academic skills required for the appropriate level. Students will engage in both in-class and out-of-class (e.g. library visits for research) activities designed specifically to achieve the proposed learning outcomes. The tasks will be guided by the core and supplementary textbooks. There will be 6 assessments to be completed per level, which aims to reflect assessment strategies of tertiary institutions. The full course consists of EAP1, EAP2 and EAP3 and thus there are two steps to achieve various exit level requirements. Pathway colleges may consider each level of achievement to satisfy their English language requirement.
Target Students
The target learner will be of upper-intermediate or advanced level who will require academic English language skills to pursue vocational or higher education studies. He/she will want to overcome the learning difficulties and cultural challenges that they may face in an academic environment not in their first language. The course is aimed at international students who hold an education visa.
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements for international students:
- EAP1 FLS Intermediate level / 4.5 (IELTS) / B1 (CEFR)
- EAP2 FLS Upper-intermediate level / 5.5 (IELTS) / B2 (CEFR)
- EAP3 FLS Advanced level / 6.0 (IELTS) / C1 (CEFR)
- To enter the EAPcourse students will need to satisfy the English entry level requirements. Students’ level of English will be determined during the placement test on arrival.
- Students who are able to provided IELTS score which is no older than one year will be exempted from the placement test.

Modes and Methods of Delivery
The EAP course is delivered on campus, full time with 20 hours per week of face-to-face instruction to meet the requirements for international students. As the ultimate aim of the course is to prepare students for their academic studies in higher education, the instruction of the EAP course takes the development and improvement of general linguistic needs for granted, instead it focuses on academic skills and specific communicative context that are to be used to accomplish certain tasks set by the students’ future studies. Therefore, the instruction of EAP courses integrates different approaches of ELT, such as task-based teaching, integrated skills teaching, and content-based instructions, which leads to innovative teaching methodologies in that specific field, rather than focusing on the four skills in isolation. Throughout the entire course students participate in face-to-face interaction only.
The teacher’s role is to support the students, encourage independent learning and research as well as provide models and interesting supplementary material for the students to use. The students are expected to have skills in autonomous learning and use them for relevant work in research and study. In brief, the EAP course employs an eclectic approach. Academic and research-based teaching method will apply to prepare students for vocational and higher education studies.
Course Structure
- Number of weeks during which structured teaching will take place: 1-36 weeks.
- Timetabled student face-to-face contact hours per week 20.
Assessment
Students will be assessed through a variety of tasks required for vocational or higher educational studies. Six assessments are conducted per level and will cover areas such as essay writing, presentation, listening notes, reading analysis, etc.
Satisfactory Course Progress
Students need to achieve 50% overall score in EAP1 / 60% overall score in EAP2 / 65% overall score in EAP3 to make satisfactory course progress. Students who fail an assessment task will be monitored by the class teacher for their capacity to achieve the required grade and may be asked to participate in additional learning activities to improve their performance.
Students need to complete academic studies and attendance requirements in order to successfully complete a level.
Course Completion
On satisfactory completion of the course/level students will be issued with a certificate.
Students who do not meet the requirements regarding the length of the enrolment and satisfactory achievement will be issued a Certificate Of Partial Completion instead. Students who require a Certificate Of Completion but do not meet the requirements will be advised to extend the course.
Attendance
Student visa holders are required to attend classes and maintain satisfactory attendance, i.e. 80% over the period of studies. Attendance is recorded on the roll at every session for 20 hours per week. If the attendance falls below the 80 percent requirement for the duration of the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), FLS may report students to the Department of Immigration.

Class teachers provide assistance with any skills/ language issues as art of the intervention strategy. Teacher Support class is available to students who require extra help with homework or extra practice in key learning areas.
